We designed this hillside pavilion to complement a family home in Cap à L’Aigle, Quebec. The goal was to create a flexible live-work space above an existing detached shop, which connects to the main home via a tunnel.
The client wanted a space large enough for family gatherings and parties, but also intimate enough to feel like a retreat, doubling as an office studio. A small kitchen and storage area are organized to support larger gatherings, along with two powder rooms.
Rather than attempting to match the style of the main home (which is somewhat ornate and typical of its build date), we opted for contrast – with a streamlined, contemporary structure. Large windows were a priority, because the main house didn’t have many windows facing the beautiful valley view.
Since the client had planned the shop 10 years prior with different goals, we were constrained by some elements, such as the location of the future stair, and mechanical equipment. But we’re really proud of the end result, which is elegant and simple in its geometry.
