This new government building in Whitehorse will house the local Mining Operations and Rescue Centre, as well as the Yukon Workers’ Safety and Compensation Board Appeal Tribunal.

With two very different usages one roof, our challenge was to accommodate the needs of both, in a relatively small footprint.

The rescue-centre side needed space to accommodate equipment and training activities, plus a double-height garage to park an emergency vehicle. The tribunal side would consist mainly of office space and boardrooms for hearings.

Separate covered entrances help distinguish these uses visually from outside. The tribunal-office entrance faces the street, and is more visually prominent, since it draws the most visitors. The rescue-centre entrance is located to the side, and used mainly by employees; alongside an industrial garage door. A folded-down segment of roof structure divides the two, also forming an elegant wayfinding element. Landscaping and distinct pathways also help direct visitors to the correct entrance.
