Location: Burnaby, BC

Scope : Architecture, Interior Design

Status: Design

The Highlawn residence can be found in Burnaby’s Brentwood Park, just north of Brentwood mall. The homes in this area have mostly retained their original character from the 1950s development that encompassed 400 acres. This was Burnaby’s first residential subdivision to feature sewers and paved streets. While the scale and type of housing have remained consistent, the urban surroundings have undergone significant changes.

Brentwood mall has undergone considerable redevelopment in recent years, creating a stark contrast in scale with the modest homes in the vicinity.

Perched atop a hill, the existing house sits on a site that slopes down from south to north. Around six properties feature retaining walls along the north wall to accommodate the grade changes. The property boasts generous front and back yards, and residents can enjoy views of a dynamic urban backdrop to the south and mountain views to the north.

The project entails a complete renovation of the original 1950s home and a modest expansion to the south. The young family wishes to retain the original house’s modest scale while updating it to suit their needs in the 2020s. They also want to enhance the outdoor/indoor connections. The proposed design involves raising the house to convert the basement into the main living space and utilizing the grade changes to incorporate sunken gardens. The gardens serve as a lovely backdrop, provide privacy, and eliminate the need for stairs to access the house. The second floor houses the bedrooms, and the former living room space has become the master bedroom, walk-in closet, and ensuite.
